Rutherglen was established
in the 1850’s with the majority of the vineyards established
by Smith, Banks, Stanton, Campbell, Buller and Morris to name
but a few.
The town was established on gold and had a very large Irish/Scottish
and Chinese population. There are Chinese burning towers in
the Rutherglen Cemetery.
It is one of the oldest wine producing areas in Australia,
and up until the great depression, it was the largest wine
producing area in the Southern Hemisphere. The first international
gold wine medals, were awarded to All Saints Estate in the
1870's in Paris. Now days Morris vineyard has taken out 4
years running the worlds best Muscat.
It is this powerful sense of history, coupled with a contemporary
approach to food and wine that attracts visitors year-round.
